Both holistic and whole-istic vets will take into consideration your pet’s entire medical history, his/her behaviour, diet, lifestyle, and relationship with you and your family. This shared approach of taking a comprehensive overview leads both types of vet to suggest a combination of therapies, including homeopathic and other treatments and lifestyle changes. Only the whole-istic vet will go further to address the imbalances in all three criteria of mind, body and spirit.
There are various associations of holistic vets, including The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy (AVH). Dr. Jeff is President of their Foundation.
Any vet can belong to any vet organization so it’s good to check out different organizations. However, each vet still needs to be evaluated. For more information check our Dr. Jeff’s blog on the subject here.
The essence of holism is simply looking at the whole picture. So a whole-istic or holistic vet may suggest a range of complementary treatments for your pet, including acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal medicines, nutritional therapy, and osteopathy. A rehabilitation program might include sports medicine techniques such as hydrotherapy, ultrasound, PEMF, massage and more to restore movement and vitality.
However, as any pet parent will know, you don’t choose a treatment for your beloved pet based on price alone! Dr. Jeff and other holistic vets will choose the best options for your pet to ensure a long and happy, healthy life as much as possible. It’s a life-long commitment that has some costs attached, but not for conventional medicines alone.

We’ll let Dr. Jeff explain this!
“The Hawaiian word ‘kahu’ embodies how we see animals as our teachers. It reflects a deeper spiritual relationship between humans and animals. Kahu embodies the idea of caring for something or someone with respect, reverence, and a sense of responsibility, rather than mere possession or control.
Using “pet parent” or “guardian” emphasizes the role of humans as compassionate caretakers who nurture, guide, and protect their animals. It moves away from the notion of ownership, which implies dominance and possession, towards a more whole-istic and interconnected relationship.”

Conventional vaccinations are designed to protect your pet against specific diseases, including:
- Canine distemper
- Canine parvovirus
- Feline panleukopenia
- Bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough)
- H3N2/H3N8 canine influenza
- Feline leukemia
- Leptospirosis
- Rabies
- Lyme disease
A combination vaccine (DA2PP / DHPP, DAPP) may be given to dogs every three years regardless of whether your pet has immunity against these diseases or not.
Titer tests measure the level of antibodies in your pet to these diseases, and can show your dog does not need booster vaccinations. Titer tests are done by your vet. Some vets use in clinic tests, and others use a laboratory service.
Yes, there are many! However, none are as effective as improving your pet’s inner balance (aka their terrain). Learn more about the importance of terrain here.
