    Dr. Dr. Jeff:

I am visiting my daughter in Fla. She has a 7 mo. old Maltese puppy, Sophie. Yesterday, she fell on the stone steps and hit her head. 30 mn. later we noticed her eye was coverd with a buble of blood. We took her to the emergency room and they releived the pressure and gave her 5 mg. of prednesone. My vet said I should follow through with the 5 day treatment. Today, her eye looks bette’ but it is discolored. she is very quiet. I do not feel comfortable giving a 4 lb. puppy this strong medication. Can I discontinue this? She seems fine otherwise and is eating.

I agree that it would be best not to use pred chronically. HOWEVER, your vet has examined the dog and you should follow his advice in this acute situation.
