Hi Dr. Jeff. My name is Lisa, and I have a 10 yr. old Shepard-Collie who has hip dysplasia. He has recently been losing weight, and, near the rear part of his body (just in front of his hips) it is becoming real sunk in. I was just wondering if this was something normal that happened w/a dog whom has hip dysplasia, or if this is something I should be concerned about?

This type of muscle atrophy is sometimes seen in dysplasia. It is not “normal” and may indicate another problem. My first concern would be to rule out degenerative myelopathy and othernerve problems as they are more commonly associated with this kind of atrophy.
