My 5-6 yr old long hair Calico has intermittent diarrhea/runny stools. She has had this since I adopted her in 2001, but the incidents were 1-2 times a month, then would return to normal. The past 6 mos. it became considerably worse and more frequent. I had her checked at my conventional vet who found no apparent cause (stool sample negative for parasites) and offered a pill to stop the diarrhea. I declined and took her to my homeopathic vet. She has since been through various Chinese herbs to stop the diarrhea (none have had a lasting effect), has an herbal mixture added to her food to soothe her system (slippery elm, acidophilus & chlorophyll), and has had her diet changed every 2-3 wks in a food trial in an effort to determine if she has a food allergy, since June. She rotated through all varieties of both Innova and Wellness canned food. For the past 2 months she has been getting canned Wysong single ingredient foods to determine if it is a single protein source that is upsetting her. she is currently trying plain baked tilapia fish. Her stool continually ranges from soft (with some formation) to completely runny, with the very occasional ‘normal’ stool. Sometimes it is a combination of all three! She is content, eats well, plays, and her coat looks healthy. The only positive change we have noticed since we began is in her behavior. She was previously EXTREMELY anxious and frightened of everything and now seems to have relaxed considerably. I am getting very concerned about 1-not having found the cause of her distress after 4 months, 2-the long term physical effects of the diahrrea and 3-the effect of the single ingredient foods (not a balanced diet). Can you offer any insights/suggestions, or should I go back to the original vet and ask for the pill that will just put an end to the diahrrea?
Thank-you for your time,

First of all, Chinese herbs are not homeopathic remedies. I think what you mean is that you went to a HOLISTIC vet who gave you herbs and other supplements. It is extremely important to know the difference between holistic and homeopathic.
Second I think what you need is a diagnosis. Did your original vet offer other diagnostics, or just give you a pill to stop the diarrhea? If your conventional vet is stuck diagnostically then I strongly recommend that you consult a Board Certified internal medicine specialist for a complete diagnosis.
Regardless of which diagnostics you choose, I strongly recommend that you seek true homeopoathic help in treating the underlying cause of this problem. You can get a referral from the AVH at http://theavh.org/refcover.htm A homeopath will even be able to use the recent shift in emotional symptoms as a very signficant clue to what is going on internally and how to help.
Please keep us informed of your progress.
