Bloody scab around penis

Our 4 month old kitten developed a scabby dark patch around the base of his penis. It appears to be dried blood, but does not seem to come from the shaft itself. He licks it a bit, but not excessively, and appears to be normal and healthy in other ways. He is not yet neutered, his appetite is normal, bathroom schedule normal, does not hide or act as if he was feeling ill. I’ve let it go for a couple days, thinking it may be a scratch, but it is not going away, and seems to have gotten bigger. Is this a serious cause for concern? Please, any ideas or impressions will be helpful! We are in financially stressful situation, so I don’t want to panic and run up a vet bill needlessly, but I don’t want to ignore something that may be serious.

Hard to say exactly what this is. Perhaps you should schedule the neutering at your vet and have him look at it at that time.
