Our 10-year-old male cat just underwent prepubic urethostomy surgery on Tuesday. He has suffered with 7 years of urinary blockages, all treated homeopathically (with subcutaneous fluids, manual bladder expression, etc.). His holistic vet finally decided that he was a good candidate for the PU, but she had not done this surgery in many years and said that we needed to find another vet to do it. Ultimately he ended up with a very severe 1-inch blockage of struvite crystals last week, was catheterized as an emergency, and the catheter damaged his urethra (thus the prepubic urethostomy).
He was operated on by a wonderful surgeon and she is very impressed with how quickly he is recovering. However, he has not regained continence. The surgery was less than 2 days ago, but already the surgeon and my husband are very worried that our cat will be permanently incontinent because he has not returned to continence immediately. My contention is that he had a catheter in for 2 days prior to the surgery, he had a week of blockages last week, he just had major surgery, and he's drugged up to boot. Is he likely to regain continence over time?
